When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Have you ever had one of those weeks where nothing is catastrophic on its own, but by the end of it you feel completely and utterly exhausted?
Not because of one big event.
Because of twenty small ones.
This week reminded me that overwhelm rarely arrives all at once. It creeps in quietly.
An unexpected bill.
A busy week at work.
A difficult appointment.
A disappointing result.
A change of plans.
A challenging conversation.
A responsibility that nobody else seems to notice.
Individually, these things are manageable. Collectively, they can leave you feeling like you're carrying the weight of the world.
I think one of the biggest misconceptions about adulthood is that stress only comes from major life events. In reality, much of our exhaustion comes from accumulation.
The emails.
The appointments.
The decisions.
The emotional labour.
The mental load of remembering what needs doing and who needs supporting.
Many of us spend our lives being the reliable person. The organiser. The problem solver. The one who remembers birthdays, books appointments, checks in on people, manages projects, plans ahead and keeps everything moving.
The problem is that reliable people are often assumed to be fine.
People know you'll cope.
People know you'll figure it out.
People know you'll get it done.
And whilst that can be a compliment, it can also become exhausting. Sometimes the people who look strongest are the people who need support the most.
I've realised recently that burnout doesn't always look like lying in bed unable to function. Sometimes it looks like snapping over something small. Crying unexpectedly. Feeling irrationally upset about a situation that wouldn't normally bother you.
Not because you're weak.
Because your emotional reserves are empty.
When we're running on empty, even minor inconveniences can feel enormous.
The answer isn't always to become stronger.
Sometimes the answer is simply to acknowledge that you've been carrying too much for too long.
To rest.
To ask for help.
To say no.
To stop trying to solve tomorrow's problems today.
Life will always be busy. There will always be responsibilities, commitments and challenges waiting around the corner.
But perhaps fulfilment isn't about learning to carry more.
Perhaps it's about learning when to put some of it down.
This week, I'm trying to remember that.
Maybe you need the reminder too.
Until next Sunday,
Nikki x
