The Luxury of Stillness: A Reminder to Pause in Everyday Life

Every day, I sit down with my journal, reflecting on what happened, how I could do better, and what’s been weighing on my mind. I often worry—about finances, my partner’s health, our fertility journey, balancing friendships, my own health, and my weight loss goals. I get so caught up in striving, fixing, improving, that I forget to be grateful for the life I have right now.
This insight hit me when I came across a post on Instagram. It listed small luxuries of adult life: drinking coffee slowly, waking up without pain, not having to count every small purchase, living near the gym, or just being close to work. As I went down the list, I realized I tick so many boxes already. I live minutes from the gym. I don't have to stress over every small expense. And yet, even with these blessings, I rush past them, always fixated on what’s next.

Today, I gave myself a rare luxury: a completely empty day. I didn’t set an alarm, and the only plan was a trip to the gym. I woke up naturally, sipped my coffee slowly, and let the morning unfold. I went to the gym when I felt ready, and when I came home, I had nothing on my to-do list. At first, it felt strange—like I needed to fill that time. I tried reading, solving a sudoku, and even felt the urge to put on a load of laundry. But then I stopped. I realized that stillness—this empty space—was itself a luxury. As the philosopher Lao Tzu once said, "In the stillness, the world is restored."
This is a reminder: we don’t always have to earn rest. We don’t have to prove we’re worthy of calm. Sometimes, the greatest luxury is simply being present—taking a quiet breath, savoring your coffee, and letting yourself be exactly where you are. So, this is your reminder—pause, slow down, and remember that your life, right now, is already enough.
Until next Sunday,
