The Importance of Having Something to Look Forward To

Yesterday, we spent the day in Dublin.
It wasn't a once-in-a-lifetime holiday. It wasn't a luxury getaway. It was simply a day trip that required an early alarm, comfortable shoes and enough energy to walk around a city for twelve hours.
And yet, for the entire week leading up to it, I found myself looking forward to it.
As I've got older, I've realised how important that feeling is.
Having something to look forward to.
Not because life is bad without it, but because life can sometimes become incredibly repetitive. We wake up, go to work, answer emails, do the food shop, clean the house, pay the bills and repeat the process all over again.
There is comfort in routine, but there can also be a heaviness to it.
Especially during busy seasons.
This month has felt particularly full for me. Work has been demanding, with projects and events requiring a lot of planning and mental energy. Outside of work, there have been family commitments, social plans, birthdays, appointments and the endless list of adult responsibilities that somehow seem to refill themselves overnight.
None of these things are negative.
In fact, many of them are things I genuinely enjoy.
But even good things require energy.
And sometimes when life feels full, having something exciting on the horizon can make a surprising difference.

The Joy Is Often In The Anticipation
One thing I've noticed is that we often focus on the event itself and forget how much enjoyment comes from anticipating it.
The excitement of booking it.
Planning it.
Talking about it.
Checking the weather forecast.
Deciding what to wear.
Looking at photos online.
Counting down the days.
Sometimes the anticipation lasts longer than the event itself.
Our Dublin trip was only one day, but I probably spent far more than one day enjoying the thought of it.
And I don't think that's a bad thing.
I think anticipation is one of life's underrated pleasures.

It Doesn't Have To Be Expensive
When people think about having something to look forward to, they often imagine holidays, promotions or major life milestones.
But I've realised the things I look forward to most are often much smaller.
A coffee date.
A long walk with my partner.
A meal with friends.
A family birthday party.
A cinema trip.
A day exploring somewhere new.
A quiet Sunday with no plans.
Small moments can create just as much excitement as big ones when we allow ourselves to appreciate them.
Creating A Life Beyond The To-Do List
I think many of us spend so much time managing our responsibilities that we forget to intentionally create experiences too.
We become excellent at maintaining life.
But maintaining life isn't quite the same as living it.
Sometimes we need things that break up the routine. Things that remind us there is more to life than productivity and obligations.
Not because we're trying to escape our lives.
But because we're trying to enrich them.
That's an important distinction.

Looking Ahead - Something to Look Forward To
Today, my feet are tired, my washing basket is somehow full again, and tomorrow will bring another working week.
Life hasn't magically changed because I spent a day in Dublin.
But I do feel refreshed.
I have new memories.
New photos.
New conversations.
New experiences.
And perhaps that's the point.
A fulfilled life isn't built from huge moments alone.
It's built from small things scattered throughout the calendar that give us something to smile about, something to anticipate and something to remember.
Because sometimes, having something to look forward to is what helps us enjoy where we are right now.
Until next Sunday,
Nikki x
