Back in December 2023, close to New Year's Eve, I was reflecting on my life and growth in the past year and established that it was not a very successful year. I felt lost; normally, I would have some goals around progressing in my career or developing myself further in my field. I would have plans to travel, but I knew that my dire financial situation would not allow me this. The monotonous days and work were slowly killing both me and my partner. Life was boring. I was lost.
Then TikTok happened. Normally, I would preach moving away from social media and pointless scrolling, but on this occasion, I was grateful I came across a post by Q-Minds Book Club. They recommended a book reading challenge for 2024 where you read 4 books a month, so 48 books in a year. The books were all centered around self-development (which I was not just interested in but also very much in need of), so I decided to give it a go. Here is the list of books if you are interested:
Once I started to read these books, I thought to myself, "These learnings are way too good not to be shared." As part of my job as a lecturer, I have tutor groups for personal and professional development. Normally, I teach the given subjects in safeguarding and current affairs, but I wanted to spice things up a bit, and I thought this could be the perfect opportunity for me to share my findings from these books with an audience.
I was a bit skeptical at first - books and teenagers don't mix well. Surprisingly, they said they would be interested, so I created Nikki's Book Club. Once a month, I planned to share my learnings with my students and discuss these in more detail, share viewpoints and talk about personal experiences. It was fabulous. After our January session, they were excited for the next one.

Unfortunately, their attention span didn't last long. I could feel most of them were switching off during our second book club session. I don't blame them, though - it is not for everyone. Plus, they are in their second year of their studies and finishing college soon, so I understand they want to use all of their time productively, working on assignments. So I decided to stop Nikki's Book Club. Some were quite upset about it. They know about this blog, so one of them suggested continuing on here.
So here we are. Welcome to Nikki's Book Club. I will probably write 3 posts to catch up with the January, February, and March books. After then, I will post once a month (probably towards the end of the month) to summarize that month's reading.
I hope you will enjoy. Please join in and share your thoughts in the comments :)
